British Columbia's Carbon Leadership Forum recently awarded North Island College's Student Housing project the Embodied Carbon Award for Large Buildings. This recognition is given to projects that best demonstrate excellence in low embodied carbon design and construction in British Columbia. We're committed to sustainable design innovation and working together to move our industry into a greener future. Congratulations to the whole team on this momentous achievement! https://lnkd.in/gWYwkz7K #EarthWeek CLF British Columbia | Carbon Leadership Forum

As we wrap up Earth Week, we're reminded that sustainable design is not enough. We must rethink our existing design strategies across all typologies — including laboratories — to promote regenerative design. Whether it’s the greenhouse gases released during construction and operation or the use of certain materials in creating sterile environments, laboratories often take a toll on both human well-being and ecological health. Here are four elements we can use to rethink lab design. https://lnkd.in/gr4DFjPd #EarthWeek #LabDesign

Meet Gina Robinson, a project designer and chair of our Sustainability Stewards Program (SSP). As the SSP chair, she provides leadership and important insights to continue improving HDR’s sustainable business operations. Gina has always been drawn to the outdoors. Some of her most formative experiences involved spending time in nature with her dad studying creatures and their place in the ecosystem. After college, she worked at an environmental nonprofit that rescued injured and orphaned birds of prey. She is passionate about environmental stewardship and volunteering in her community. Our Sustainable Stewards Program is a significant part of how we are working toward achieving HDR's sustainability commitment to strive toward an inclusive, sustainable future and elevating our communities, industry, and professions through human-inspired technical and creative solutions. Thank you for all you do, Gina! #EarthWeek

As custodians of the built environment, HDR's commissioning engineers play a meaningful role in how we help to address the effects of climate change, by ensuring buildings perform at their optimum. As of 2022, construction and building operations are responsible for 40% of the world's annual carbon emissions. Joe Pitt CEng FCIBSE MASHRAE, director, shares how building performance, enabled by a leading-edge commissioning effort, has to be an industrywide approach to provide efficiencies throughout an asset’s life cycle. Happy Earth Day! We’re celebrating the sustainable work we do, including projects that help clients and communities better understand and implement a circular economy. In Colorado, our team partnered with Eunomia Research & Consulting and Circular Action Alliance to spearhead the first producer-led needs assessment in the United States, marking critical progress toward implementing the state's Extended Producer Responsibility law for plastic packaging and paper products. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis called out all the benefits this week when talking about the I-70 Floyd Hill project: "Improving safety, reducing traffic congestion and making it an easier trip to the mountains." We’re excited to be providing roadway, structural, and geotechnical engineering expertise for this transformative Colorado project, and honored to have Gov. Polis and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg tour the site. See the interview here: https://lnkd.in/g4mxD3q2 It's been great partnering with Colorado Department of Transportation, as well as AtkinsRéalis, to move forward with this important effort.

"It's kind of like doing an open heart surgery on the state of South Carolina. You still have to make everything work, but you have to fix it." The Carolina Crossroads program in Columbia will reshape transportation in the South Carolina capital. Excited to be playing a key role in making sure this critical upgrade gets done. Hear from some of our team members about the importance of the project and what it means to them. Then read more about the program here: https://lnkd.in/gcpzwc6E
